Sharing and importing tests

Hand a test to a teammate or another account with a single shareable import URL.

View as Markdown

Sometimes you want to hand a test to a teammate, a contractor, or another account without exporting and re-uploading anything. The Import URL feature does this in one link, and it is the recommended way to share a test between Testsnag accounts.

  1. 1Generate an import URL. Anyone signed in who follows it gets an independent copy.
  2. 2Regenerating the link invalidates the previous one.

Generating an import URL

From a test's Settings page, generate an import URL. Anyone signed in to Testsnag who follows the link will see a preview of the test, including its name, description, type, step count, and target URL, so they can decide whether they actually want it before importing. One click on "Create Copy" creates an independent test under their account, and they can then edit, run, and re-share it without affecting the original in any way.

The copy is independent

The copy is fully independent of the original. The original owner sees no changes when the copy is edited or run, and the copy owner cannot push changes back to the original. This is a deliberate model, because an import URL is a snapshot rather than a subscription. If you want everyone to stay in sync on a single canonical test, share an account or a suite instead.

If you would rather pull the link, regenerate it. The previous URL stops working and a new one is issued, so accidentally-shared links are easy to invalidate. This is the recommended way to share starter templates internally, hand off pre-built tests during onboarding, or duplicate a complex flow across accounts without rebuilding it from scratch.

Cloning your own tests

It is also useful as a personal tool. You can use the same URL to clone a known-good test as a starting point when authoring something similar, which is often faster than scaffolding a new test from scratch when there is already a test that does most of what you want.
